Understanding Studio Flash

Come join me for an afternoon of hands-on learning with studio strobes and light modifiers. In this workshop I will explain and demonstrate how to use studio strobes as well as discuss the differences between using flash and continuous light. Another aspect to this is understanding the difference between using studio flash in manual mode versus TTL and why you would want to avoid the latter.
This is also a great opportunity to gain experience with different types of light shaping tools such as softboxes and reflectors as well as accessories like grids and snoots. This three-hour workshop will combine  lecture, along with Q&A and hand on experience using the studio flashes we will have on hand.

Detailed Description

The session will start with discussion on the basics of how studio strobes work and how to use them with your camera. From there we will discuss more details about settings for both the lights and camera and most importantly, why those settings are important.

After that, we will start working directly with the studio lights we have on hand. I will have a flash trigger with me that will work across various brands of cameras, as well as a Sony dedicated remote for those using that brand of camera. I will go over how to use a non-dedicated trigger for all cameras, as it is important to understand some things that are specific to using mirrorless cameras and non-dedicated flash triggers.

Once we are comfortable getting our cameras connected and adjusted for using the studio lights, we will have a live shooting session with a model(s) who will join us so we can put into practice what we have learned.

During the live shooting portion of the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to try out various modifiers on the same subject. This is a great way to see the differences and qualities of light that the various sizes, shapes, and designs of a softbox and/or reflector will render. Students are encouraged to bring their cameras to participate in the live shooting portion of the workshop.

We will have models on hand to work with but I encourage participants to also be subjects. This helps create an understanding of how the setup appears to the subject. This can also be very useful for setting up your own lights when you don’t have someone to test with before a shoot. This session will be limited to 8 participants to make sure everyone gets time to shoot.

In the workshops that I present, I encourage questions and collaboration, so while there is an agenda that we will follow, we may also diverge into a topic or two along the way. These will be driven by the questions and interests of the participants, so everyone can get the most out of their time.

Who This Workshop is For

This workshop is for photographers who are comfortable using their cameras in Manual mode. No previous experience with using studio lights is necessary. Participants are encouraged to bring their camera to use during the shooting sessions. Participants can bring a studio light and/or their flash meter if they have questions about working with that specific device.
