Detailed Description

The session will begin with a discussion of the basics of how studio strobes work and how to use them with your camera. From there, we’ll go over camera and light settings in more detail, with an emphasis on why those settings matter.

In this workshop, we will discuss and demonstrate how to use a flash meter. While one can experiment and through trial and error finally achieve the correct settings, using a meter will give the you the information you need to get it correct from the start.

Next, we’ll move into hands-on work with the studio lights available on site. I’ll have a flash trigger that works with a variety of camera brands, along with Canon and  Sony-specific remotes. I’ll also explain how to use a non-dedicated trigger with different camera systems, including a few important considerations for mirrorless cameras.

Once everyone is comfortable connecting and adjusting their cameras for studio lighting, we’ll move into a live shooting session with a model so you can apply what you’ve learned. During this portion of the workshop, participants will be able to try different modifiers on the same subject, making it easy to compare how various softbox and reflector sizes, shapes, and designs affect the quality of light.

For this workshop, I also offer the option to spend some time working with studio flashes in an outdoor setting near the studio. If you are interested in learning how to balance flash with sunlight, this is a great opportunity to practice in a live shoot setting.

Students are encouraged to bring their cameras and take part in the live shoot.

We will have models on hand to work with but I encourage participants to also be subjects. This helps create an understanding of how the setup appears to the subject. This can also be very useful for setting up your own lights when you don’t have someone to test with before a shoot. This session will be limited to 8 participants to make sure everyone gets time to shoot.

In the workshops that I present, I encourage questions and collaboration, so while there is an agenda that we will follow, we may also diverge into a topic or two along the way. These will be driven by the questions and interests of the participants, so everyone can get the most out of their time.

Who This Workshop is For

This workshop is for photographers who are comfortable using their cameras in Manual mode. No previous experience with using studio lights is necessary. Participants are encouraged to bring their camera to use during the shooting sessions. Participants can bring a studio light and/or their flash meter if they have questions about working with that specific device.
